The purpose was to announce to Management of Ghana’s public service broadcaster, the detailed programme of activities lined- up for the anniversary celebrations running through the month of July, this year, and to welcome GBC’s contribution to the success of the historic event.
Addressing GBC Management, Justice Adjei-Frimpong underscored the court's far-reaching contributions to Ghana's democracy beyond its role as a dispute resolution body. "The Supreme Court has not just been a dispute resolution institution, but it has become a party to how democratic we are as a country."
He said the milestone anniversary marks 150 years of the Supreme Court’s existence from 1876 to 2026. According to him, the court traces its roots to colonial days, beginning as a simple institution set up to administer justice and supplement the traditional court system, and evolving over time to assume powerful roles including the interpretation of Ghana’s Constitution and the shaping of the country’s democratic governance.

Justice Adjei-Frimpong highlighted the court’s landmark ruling on the right to demonstrate as one defining moment in Ghana’s democratic history, noting that the court struck down the requirement for police permits and replaced it with a simple notification process.
Receiving the delegation, the Director-General of GBC Prof. Amin Alhassan expressed the Corporation's delight at the visit and recalled the deep and historic bond between GBC and the Supreme Court, anchored in the landmark NPP v. GBC ruling. He noted that the Supreme Court's directive mandating GBC to ensure equal airtime for both the ruling government and the opposition during elections had profoundly shaped the Corporation's editorial independence for over 30 years, describing the equal-airtime arrangement as unique on the African continent and admired by a recent Commonwealth delegation. "When I meet my colleagues at conferences and I explain the details of the judgment to them, they are just amazed” he said.

He pledged GBC’s full resources and the use of its national platforms to ensuring that the anniversary celebrations of the Supreme Court of Ghana at 150 reach every Ghanaian.

The celebrations spans from 2nd to 31st July 2026, featuring a rich array of activities designed to engage the public and the legal community. Highlights of the activities are, Anniversary lectures in Cape Coast, Kumasi and Accra on 2nd, 15th and 23rd July respectively, Media Engagements, Health Walk and Legal Outreach in Accra on July 11, a "What-Do-You-Know" Competition on July 12, Moot Court competition on July 20 and 21, Sports Activities on July 25, a Durbar on July 28, a Dinner and Awards Night on July 30, and a Thanksgiving Service on July 31. The theme for the celebration is "Honouring the Past, Celebrating the Present and Defining the Future."
