BRAZIL’S CHIEF JUSTICE INVITES GHANA’S
CHIEF JUSTICE TO BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OF INDEPENDENT JUDICIARY IN
BRAZIL
Her Ladyship the Chief Justice, Mrs. Georgina Theodora Wood, has accepted
an invitation from her Brazilian counterpart, Justice Ellen Gracie, to
participate, as a special guest, in celebrations marking the Bicentennial
of an Independent Judiciary in Brazil. The year-long celebration started
in May 2007 and will be characterized by monthly conferences on judicial
review.
At its high point in May 2008, Chief Justice Wood will be keynote speaker
at the conference.
The invitation from Brazil was delivered by the Brazilian ambassador
in Ghana, Mr. Louis Fernando Serra, accompanied by Mr. Marco Farani, Counsellor
in the Brazilian Cultural Affairs Department.
Accepting the invitation, Chief Justice Wood, who has a Brazilian ancestry,
thanked the Judiciary as well as the Government of Brazil for the honour
which, she said, should not reflect on her alone but on Ghana as a whole.
She said her participation will help tighten the bond of friendship between
Ghana and Brazil. Speaking on the judiciary, Chief Justice Wood said that
“in the past, Ghana had looked to the Western judiciary for inputs;
now we can look at South-South co-operation, and this gives us the opportunity
to study their system and adopt some of their best practices.”
