36 NEW LAWYERS CALLED TO THE BAR
The special meeting was opened through a motion by Mr. Kwame Osei Prempeh, Deputy Attorney-General, and seconded by Mr. Benson Nutsukpui, Vice President of the Ghana Bar Association.

Addressing the lawyers, Chief Justice Wood said, as lawyers, they owed a duty to society to strive to give back to it what it had contributed to shape their lives. She said their decision to freely offer themselves to the service of the public, the law profession, their clients and the court, placed an awesome responsibility on them, and the general public would expect them to exhibit a high degree of uprightness and decency on both their private and professional life.

Chief Justice Wood congratulated them on their tenacity and achievement and expressed the hope that some of them would join the Judiciary to fill up vacancies on the Bench.

She said the discovery of oil had opened up new vistas for lawyers and it was incumbent on them to take up oil and gas related courses to prepare themselves for the disputes which were bound to come up with the windfall. The Judiciary, on its part, intends to sponsor two senior judges to do post-graduate courses in that sector in a Scottish university.

Chief Justice re-stated her call on the government for assistance to the Ghana Law School which will celebrate its Golden Jubilee this year.
