LAUNCH OF THE JUDICIAL CLERKHIP PROGRAMME

The clerkship programme is the concept of engaging newly qualified lawyers of the Ghana Law School to work with justices of the superior courts on a variety of services which will include legal research, drafting of Memoranda and verification of references and citations.

The clerkship which is for a period of one year could be extended for another year depending on a number of conditions and factors.

In a speech read on behalf of Her Ladyship the chief justice, Mr. Justice Stephen Allan Brobbey, a Supreme Court judge, said in addition to the other functions to be performed, the judicial clerks will also be required to carry out some administrative tasks.

According to Justice Brobbey the program is designed to be of immense benefit to the justices and the clerks who will have meaningful access to the judicial process and deep knowledge on the working of the courts which will assist in getting lawyers with brilliant academic background to be interested in working on the Bench and thus improving future Judicial recruitments.

Justice Brobbey said the ultimate objective of the program was to improve the quality of justice in the superior courts and made a special appeal to those to be engaged in the programme to give of their best in other to ensure the sustenance of the program in future.
The co-coordinator of the clerkship programme, Mr. Kofi Abotsi, said the short listed among brilliant students of the Ghana Law School are taken through thorough scrutiny before they are appointed. It is targeted at the best legal brains graduating from the Law School. He said the clerk is supposed to be a very well qualified, very brilliant top-of-the-class person, and the programme is aimed at people with that sort of intellectual background who can support judges in the very important but rather confidential task of opinion writing.

Prof. Paolo Galizzi of the Fordham Law School. said that the sensitive nature of the programme demanded that only candidates who prove themselves in high academic excellence are selected. He hoped the programme would go a long way to support the rule of law in Ghana
Four computer donated by Fordham Law School in the U.S were given to the appointed clerks.
